Illustrated book, student work for the Brienenoord Island (2024)

Brief
Explore Brienenoord Island from a different angle – using different research methods to discover how Brienenoord, in the context of the river Maas, the City of Rotterdam, and everything surrounding the island, can be explored and mapped from a non-human perspective.

Insight

Children are better at identifying Pokemon characters than real animals and plants.

Concept
With this interactive picturebook, aimed at children age 3–6, we step into an interactive world with funny stories inspired by the bugs on the Brienenoord island.  The stories are fabricated through research on the island, where we examined the bugs closely with a microscope, mapped their natural ecosystems, and used visual references captured directly from the island through cyanotype prints.
